Highland Park hillside Multi-Family
Highland Park Hillside Multi-family Housing
We are excited about our brand new multi-family project in Highland Park! The fourplex design, is essentially a Duplex with two ADU’s that takes advantage of new state ADU laws that allow multiple ADU’s to be paired with existing or proposed Multifamily dwellings. We are excited to add density while preserving historic character with our project, located on a beautiful, hillside site in the Highland Park-Garvanza HPOZ (historic district). Our design draws inspiration from the neighboring, historic 1907 “La Paloma Residence,” paired with other California Architectural influences of Maybeck, Greene & Greene, Irving Gill, R.M. Schindler, Neutra and Buff & Hensman.
We had a number of interesting challenges when designing for this site. In addition to the historic context, a big challenge was that the historic lot was very narrow, just 35 feet wide! So we had to get creative! Not much room for conventional landscaping - so we went vertical with monumental trellis work. The post and beam trellis steps up the hill and accentuates the massing while supporting beautiful vines.
Spanning the eras, we see a unique California through line of indoor-outdoor garden living, residential human scale, natural light, use of natural materials, post and beam construction and the ever-wonderful bungalow court. We are delighted for out new hillside fourplex to follow in the footsteps of the storied California design tradition.
