Atwater - Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU)

Atwater Village - Second Story Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU)

Yes, you can build an ADU on top of your house! Our client had a tiny lot with no room to build a conventional detached ADU. We used new ADU state laws that allow you to build up. The result is a light filled ADU, that perches on the second floor above a classic Atwater Spanish Revival bungalow. The two bedroom / one bath, 750 SF ADU is compact. Yet our expertise in thoughtful built-in details make the most of the petite living spaces. From built-in work desks; built-in shelving; built-in windows seats; to the built-in shelf with hooks that creates a “micro mudroom”, all of our crafted moments make for a highly livable ADU. For the design, we blended contemporary with historic styles throughout the ADU. You are greeted by a classic, arched entry way with a Mexican tile finished staircase that draws you up to the second floor ADU. There, many contemporary design notes play off the historic Spanish Revival style. From playful porthole and arched windows, a small balcony and loads of colorful, handmade Mexican tile nod to the classic Spanish Revival style of the primary dwelling, while contemporary details of skylights and window seats add light and functionality throughout.
